Army to provide shelter to flood victims in military camp – Bernama


A piano set lies among other damaged school equipment outside Sekolah Menengah Kuala Krai, which was ravaged by flood last week. – The Malaysian Insider pic by Afif Abd Halim, January 7, 2015.The Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) will use its Sungai Durian Camp in Kuala Krai as a temporary relief centre for flood victims.Armed Forces chief Gen Tan Sri Zulkifeli Mohd Zin said the camp would accommodate victims whose homes were severely damaged or totally destroyed by the floods."We will use the Sungai Durian camp as it can cater to about 40 families at a time," he told Bernama when met at Sekolah Kebangsaan Lati, Rantau Panjang today.He said they have also agreed to utilise National Service (NS) camps, especially those in Gua Musang, for the same purpose."We will vacate the camps and transfer NS trainees in Gua Musang to other camps in Kelantan so that flood victims can use the facility temporarily," he said.Meanwhile, in Kuala Terengganu, Menteri Besar Datuk Ahmad Razif Abdul Rahman said the state government will send 1,000 volunteers, including 100 carpenters, to Kelantan to assist in the post-flood phase this Friday and Saturday.He said volunteers will be divided to cover two areas, whereby 500 will be in Dabong, led by Cluster and Sports officer Zaidi Muda, while 500 others will be in Machang led by Terengganu Umno Youth chief Mohd Johari Abu Bakar."Our focus is to help clean up public areas such as schools, mosques and suraus and transit houses will be built for flood victims who lost their homes and are currently sheltered by tents by the road."The carpenters will repair damaged homes in Dabong," he told reporters in a press conference today.In Kuala Nerus, Felda Terengganu held the "Masih Ada Yang Sayang" programme to help flood victims in the districts of Kuala Krai, Manik Urai, Dabong, Pasir Mas, Tumpat and Tanah Merah in Kelantan.Felda Terengganu general manager Mohd Helmi Fakhzan Abdul Wahab said the mission involved 400 participants from 20 Felda settlements, management, non-governmental organisations and youths."Among the things we brought for the victims are necessities such as 'kain pelikat', 'kain batik', prayer items, clothes and food like rice and sardines, among others," he told reporters at the Felda Terengganu Headquarters before leaving for Kelantan today. – Bernama, January 7, 2015.
